5 Important Criteria For A Successful Hair Transplant

Although hair transplant surgery is more popular than ever, many of the information we read about hair transplants both on the internet sites and in the printed visual media actually cause the basic information to be neglected. Therefore, it is important to understand the basic steps of a successful hair transplant surgery correctly.

  1. Correct diagnosis and the planning
    • Extraction of hair follicles without any damage
    • Maintaining the extracted hair grafts in the optimum conditions
    • Paying attention to angle, direction and the density issues in the placement of hair follicles
    • Post-operative care

To Explain These Steps One By One

The First Crucial Point: Accurate Diagnosis and The Planning
In order to plan a hair restoration, it is important first to diagnose the reason of the hair loss. This diagnosis will shed light on the planning of hair transplantation. For example, if a person’s hair loss still continues, the areas that are likely to be lost in the future should be also considered and included in the planning of the transplant in the planning stage of the operation.

The facial structure is not just all about the today’s appearance. In other words, when planning a hair transplant, a forehead line should not be drawn by considering only the appearance in the 20s, but should also be created by considering the future ages.

In addition, the hairline should not be in the form of a straight line. This significantly affects the natural appearance of the transplant.

The Second Crucial Point: Healthy Collection of Hair Grafts
Tremendous care must be taken to preserve their integrity when extracting healthy hair follicles one by one for the transplantation, using either the classical FUE or DHI technique. In order not to damage the grafts during the extraction of hair follicles, it is very important to pay attention to their natural angle and direction. Otherwise, the grafts and surrounding tissues may be damaged. If a graft is damaged during the extraction, it means that there is not much to be done to compensate in the following processes. In other words, the hair which cannot settle in a healthy way on the transplant area will actually only remain on the scalp for the first 3-5 days, and then it will be ruined.

The Third Crucial Point: Conservation of The Extracted Hair Grafts
Keeping the extracted grafts at +4 degrees is an vital for their life cycle. Another important factor to keep the grafts in a healthy way is placing them in a nutrient solution. Even if we consider and apply all these, the waiting period of the grafts after the extraction is way more important than all of them. In Standard FUE procedure, hair follicles have to be kept in solutions for a certain period of time. Because after all the hair is extracted, the transplantation process is started.

In the DHI technique, the extracted hair is transplanted immediately. In the DHI Hair Transplant technique, the hair follicles are transplanted into the new transplant area 1-2 minutes after they are extracted from the donor area. In the meantime, they do not need to be kept at +4 degrees or in a nutrient solution. Since the hair follicles are extracted and transplanted directly, it means that the rate of graft loss has decreased to almost zero. There is no doubt that, at this point, we consider it necessary to refer once again to the second critical point, that the hair grafts should not be damaged during the extraction.

The Fourth Crucial Point: Placement of the hair grafts
The transplantation of hair grafts with the conservation under the suitable conditions, which was mentioned in the previous crucial point, is an ultimately critical step that determines the result. First of all, the following statement should be mentioned: An individual’s hair growth pattern is as unique as a fingerprint and only if the necessary planning can be done with a highly skilled and experienced surgeon, a successful hair transplantation result will emerged based on the patient’s specific hair characteristics.

We can classify the crucial points to be considered for the transplantation of the grafts under four components:

The angle of the hair grafts to the scalp,
The direction of the hair grafts,
Planning of transplanting at the highest possible density level and
The transplantation of hair grafts in the correct order.

Let’s take a closer look at these terms. First of all, lets take into consideration that the angle of the hair grafts with the scalp. The generally accepted angle is considered as 40 degrees. Of course, it cannot be said that this will be the same for everyone. It can be observed that this angle may be increased a few degrees more especially for a person who has combed his hair backwards throughout his life, or it may be decreased for a person who has combed it in the opposite way. For this reason, the doctor must have analyzed the hair follicles properly.

The second issue is the direction of the hair grafts. Here, too, the direction of the hair should be perpendicular to the face on the front-top part, and as it goes to the sides, the angles of both sides should lean towards that direction. Then, the top part, where the direction issue is the most difficult to be determined, should be resolved satisfactorily with the experience of the doctor and the team performing the operation. As for the third component, it is density. An optimum number of the good-quality grafts must be extracted first. The area where the maximum number of grafts is extracted is the area at the back of the head, between the two ears. The hair in that area is only slightly affected by the male hormone, the hormone that triggers shedding. That is why they are so valuable. However in recent years, the beard is also considered as a good donor area by pioneering of Serkan Aydın. The area under the chin (beard area) which is resistant to shedding, takes an important role as another donor area to utilize to obtain a dense hair transplant. The more hair follicles are extracted means that the more grafts to be transplanted in accordance with the transplanting rules, and this will affect the density of the hair and appearance positively.

    The Fifth Crucial Step: Maintenance
If the person undergoing hair transplant has both alcohol and smoking habits, it is inevitably the doctor’s recommendation to quit these habits that day. Because alcohol and cigarettes mix with the blood and prevent the red blood cells, which are the fundamental blood cells, from performing their essential oxygen transport duties. This negatively affects the nutrition of hair follicles. In the aftercare process of the transplanted hair, vitamins and protein-based nutrition are other elements that will help you. Apart from these, washing your hair, keeping it clean and staying away from stress are issues that affect the health of your hair for life positively.
